Educational Background (limit 75 words)
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Economics from Rutgers University and J.D. from George Washington University Law School.
Civic Organizations (limit 75 words)
I am a former member of the Civil Service Board for the City of Orlando. I also served as the Treasurer of the Orange County Democrats and the Vice President of Communications for the Orange County Young Democrats.
An estimated 300,000 people have died from gun violence between 2004 and 2014. Do you believe the Second Amendment leaves any room for limits on gun rights? If so, please outline what those limits should be. (limit 150 words)
Yes, the Second Amendment still allows government to ban particularly dangerous weapons such as assault weapons, automatic weapons, rocket launchers and other military grade firearms. The Supreme Court recently refused to hear appeals from the Highland Park Case which affirms that these limitations are constitutional.
Some 30 million Americans remain uninsured. Would you support or oppose the Affordable Healthcare Act as currently written? Explain why you would support its continuation or what kind of plan, if any, should replace it. (limit 150 words)
I support the Affordable Healthcare Act as currently written. However, I would be open-minded to amendments which would expand healthcare to cover this remaining population of Americans. In addition, I support expanding Medicaid in Florida and would also support alternatives which would cover this population that falls in the gap currently.
Some presidential candidates have said they would favor getting rid of the U.S. Department of Education. Explain what kind of role you believe the federal government should play in education and what federal education policies you would support or oppose. (limit 150 words)
I oppose eliminating the U.S. Department of Education. I believe the role of the federal government in education is primarily to provide funding, assure equal access and school resources for all American students, and to safeguard our schools against discrimination. I would oppose policies which substantially expand high stakes testing or take away local control other than local policies which are discriminatory and/or unlawful.
The U.S. debt is approaching $20 trillion, and interest payments on the debt were $223 billion in 2015. What measures would you support to reduce the annual budget deficit that contributes to the national debt? (limit 150 words)
I support the former President Bill Clinton’s “PAYGO” policy to assure that new spending should only be enacted if there are equal revenue enhancements or budget reductions. I would support tax reform to close tax exemption and deduction loopholes only enjoyed by a small minority of wealthy Americans.
