Please describe your positions on the legislative responsibility for protecting the public interest in the Education, Health Care and Criminal Justice systems. Do you have any specific proposals to improve these systems? (limit 150 words)
I believe that the legislature has a large responsibility in these systems. When it comes to education, health care, and criminal justice, instituting for-profit counterparts is a slippery slope we need to avoid. The legislature needs to make funding for these systems a priority. In Education, we need to reduce expensive, high-risk testing, and we need to recruit and retain the best teachers by offering competitive compensation and by treating them with the respect they deserve. In Health Care, I will work to expand Medicaid and make sure everyone has access to affordable healthcare coverage. Finally, I will work to encourage relationships between our community leaders and law enforcement officers and ensure we are working together to keep our city and state safe. This includes not allowing guns on our college campuses, expanding background checks, and banning high-capacity assault rifles.
Over 500,000 working poor Florida citizens remain without health insurance. Would you support tapping federal dollars to cover these people? If not, what kind of plan do you support? (limit 150 words)
I support using federal money to help our citizens receive health insurance. We need to expand Medicaid and work to close the gap. By covering more people, the cost of premiums will go down. Another way to push the cost of premiums down is to enforce policies already in place to reduce fraud.
An estimated 300,000 people died from gun violence between 2004 and 2014. Here at home in Orlando, the June 12 nightclub shooting saw 49 people killed, and 50 more wounded. Do you support or oppose a state ban on assault weapons and/or more thorough background checks? (limit 150 words)
The tragedy that occurred on June 12th hit very close to home for me. Orlando is my home and I want to protect it. This means supporting a ban on assault weapons and implementing universal background checks. We need to make sure hateful individuals with a history of violence can’t get access to a firearm, and we need to make sure our children our safe. Guns should not be allowed on college campuses or in our schools. These are common sense gun control regulations that we can implement to make sure our city and state are safe.
