Please describe your positions on the legislative responsibility for protecting the public interest in the Education, Health Care and Criminal Justice systems. Do you have any specific proposals to improve these systems? (limit 150 words)
As the father of three children and the husband of a public school teacher, I am committed to improving the education system in our state. I believe we must fully fund our public schools, stop the obsession with high stakes testing, and do more to attract quality teachers to Florida. I have been endorsed by the Orange County Classroom Teachers Association and the Orange County Education Support Professional Association.
I believe everyone should have access to affordable healthcare, which is why I support Medicaid expansion in Florida. I also believe we must do more to control the price of drugs to protect the patients who need them.
Regarding criminal justice, I am against the for-profit prison industry in this state. I also support the decriminalization of marijuana, because the enforcement of the current law unjustly targets Black and Latino members of society.
Over 500,000 working poor Florida citizens remain without health insurance. Would you support tapping federal dollars to cover these people? If not, what kind of plan do you support? (limit 150 words)
Yes, I support expanding Medicaid in the state of Florida to cover hundreds of thousands of uninsured working poor Florida citizens. This policy will save lives. It will also lower healthcare costs, because it will increase the availability of preventative care. Preventative care, which is difficult to access without insurance, is much more cost effective than expensive emergency room visits. For these reasons, Medicaid expansion will increase the health of our economy and the health of our citizens. I led the movement for the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metro Orlando to endorse Medicaid expansion in Florida, the only local chamber of commerce to do so. I will exercise this same leadership in Tallahassee for the benefit of all Floridians.
An estimated 300,000 people died from gun violence between 2004 and 2014. Here at home in Orlando, the June 12 nightclub shooting saw 49 people killed, and 50 more wounded. Do you support or oppose a state ban on assault weapons and/or more thorough background checks? (limit 150 words)
I absolutely support a state ban on assault weapons and more thorough background checks. As the President of the Hispanic Bar Association of Central Florida, I have been at the forefront of aiding the many families and survivors affected by the Pulse tragedy in need of pro bono immigration assistance, as the LGBT Latino community was especially impacted. The stories I heard from survivors in the hospital are heartbreaking. Commonsense gun safety legislation is a top priority for me in Tallahassee, and I have already been a vocal advocate of gun safety measures at public protests and on television. I also support limiting gun magazine capacity and closing the private sale loophole, which allows criminals to purchase weapons without a background check. As a gun owner myself, I believe these policies are compatible with the Second Amendment and will mitigate the chances of another tragedy striking our community.
